In this series sponsored by ProWatercraftRacing.com, MotorActionMedia interviews talented and passionate athletes on their love for the sport and how ProWatercraftRacing.com handling components help them charge after their goals.
MotorActionMedia.com interviews Jonna Borgström, one of the top competitors in the ladies division. Jonna is from Sweden, and races a Hydrospace on team Kev-Racing, which is headed by none other than Kevin Reiterer. She, as well as the rest of the team, uses ProWatercraft Racing.com handling products to help push their skis.
Jonna, could you tell me a little about your background in racing? You have been racing for a while, what drives you to keep competing every year?
I did my first race in 2008 when I was 10 years old and my father was racing for a long time before I started. What drives me to keep competing every year is my family and friends. My family have been doing this for so long and it’s something that we all love to do together. And I have met so many friends on the races so I’m always happy to see them.
You had an extremely successful year at last year’s IJSBA World Finals, placing second in the ladies’ Pro division. What are your goals for this season? How do you plan to achieve them?
This year I’m going to some new races that I haven’t been on before. I’ve got a contract for the UIM World Championship and I’m also doing the UIM European Championship. The riders on these races are really fast so the competition is hard. In the UIM World Championship it’s hard for me to keep up with the others because they have faster skis and more experience from these races than me, So my goal for this year is to train and learn as much as possible and hopefully I will get better results next year.
Do you think your use of Pro Watercraft handling products helped you race your way to that second place finish last year at the IJSBA World Finals? How so?
Yes I think so, last year we were working on my ski all summer trying to make it better and better. With the ski It was harder to turn right than left with the ski and we couldn’t understand why. We tried the sponsons and the ride plate and it was a lot better, but still not 100% good. I was racing and training on the ski all summer and I felt that I was faster than the year before. When I came to Havasu, Chris Hagest had a look on the ski and he found the problem, after he fixed it the handling was perfect and I was ready for the race!
I understand you run some Pro Watercraft handling components, could you tell me which ones?
I have the ProWatercraft Racing.com sponsons and the ProWatercraft Racing.com ride plate. I’m feeling much more safe and confident on my ski now they have definitely made me a better rider. Before installing them, I didn’t feel so confident on my ski, I didn’t know how much speed I could have in the turns because it felt like I didn’t have enough grip. But now with the ProWatercraft Racing.com sponsons and the rideplate I can have much more speed in the turns because the grip is a lot better. So I fell more confident and faster with the ProWatercraft Racing.com sponsons and with the ride plate I can make much sharper turns than I did before.
You typically race well in the ladies division, and sometimes even in the men’s division. What do you think it takes to be competitive against the men?
Every girl can race with the boys, as long as they are not afraid. The boys are much tougher on the track so it’s harder than racing in the ladies class. That’s why I race with the boys, it’s the best training you could get. I also don’t care about the results, I only do it for fun.
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to thank my teammate, Kevin Reiterer. He is the one who introduced me to the ProWatercraft Racing.com components and helped me make the handling on my ski better.
