SPOTLIGHT: Brian Kottke

MotorActionMedia.com catches a few questions with freestyle #JMX athlete and JetRenu team member, Brian Kottke.

Brian, could you tell me how you got involved in the sport? What are you currently doing this season?

I got involved in the sport thanks to my dad. He started out riding back in ’84 and then taught me how to ride about 9 years ago. I’m really new to the freestyle/freeride side of the sport as I just bought my first more “trick capable” ski at the beginning of this season, so I’ve mostly just been riding and practicing at my local lakes and then attending some local freerides here in the midwest.

I understand that your primary focus is freestyle, what made you decide to choose that route?

Like most jet skiers I got introduced to all the aspects of the sport thanks to YouTube. I’ve spent countless hours watching videos of guys like Rick Roy, Taylor Curtis, Mark Gomez, Pierre Maxient, Zack Bright, and many more. It’s always blown my mind what these guys can do on a Jet Ski and I guess it just inspired me to want to be like them. Nothing against racing at all, but freestyle and freeriding have always sparked my interest more.
We have to ask, what’s your favorite or best trick??

My favorite trick is actually a freeride trick; that trick is a surf reentry. It’s not the most technical trick by any means, but I love it because it just looks so cool if you do it off of the right wave.

Brian’s wicked motor.

Could you tell us about your JetSki? What hull is it, what’s under the hood?

It’s a T.C. Freeride built 2014 Rickter Evo 1 FR2. It has a Dasa 1100 stroker with a RRP Carbon Ninja pipe and it’s turning a Skat Trak 155 Mag pump. I couldn’t be more happy with it. It absolutely rips!
What are your goals for the future/this season?

Since the riding season is starting to come to a close up here in Minnesota and most of the events I ride at are already over for the season, my goal is to try and ride in Lake Superior as much as possible this fall. The fall is when the fresh water surf really starts to get going and I’m hoping to try to get some well needed freeride practice in.unnamed-2

I also understand that you use JetRenu products, could you pick a favorite? Why do you like it?

Although I absolutely love all of the Jet Renu products, if I had to choose one product to be my favorite it would probably have to be Pink +. The reason I love it so much is because I’ve owned a few dark colored skis over the years and they were always a nightmare to keep the water spots off of. Ever since I started using Pink + it’s been super easy to keep them clean and water spot free!

Would you recommend it to other freestyle riders? Why so?

I would definitely recommend it to other freestyle riders. In fact I’d recommend the products to anyone because I’ve been so impressed with all the products. I even used them on my F-250 once and I was amazed how good it turned out!
Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I thought it might be cool to have a question about what my favorite riding spot is as I’ve seen that in a quite a few interviews before. That being said, my favorite place to ride is Black Harbor Michigan which is a harbor on Lake Superior.
Please feel free to thank your sponsors/friends/family.

I’d like to thank a few people for helping me get to where I am. First I’d like to thank Taylor Curtis of T.C. Freeride for building me such an amazing ski. Thanks to my dad for all his support, for introducing me to the sport, and going riding with me all the time. A big thanks as well to my mom for putting up with me and my dad being gone riding so much. Finally I’d like to thank my sponsor Jet Renu for supplying me with all of their awesome products and I’d also like to thank my other sponsor Spring Touch for helping me out with my employment and also for letting me have some time off when I need to get away for freerides.
